Programme
Overview
Experience Britten’s lyrical brilliance as playful Scots dialect rhymes collide with the dark beauty of Blake’s timeless proverbs. A vocalist and pianist guide you on a journey through wit, mystery and profound human insight. This intimate recital reveals Britten’s exceptional gift for song, spanning his formative twenties to the reflective mid-fifties. The programme opens with William Soutar’s Scots dialect lyrics in the enchanting cycle Who Are These Children?, rich with playful rhymes and riddles. It then turns to the Songs and Proverbs of William Blake, a deeply evocative work suffused with meditations on human nature and eternity, originally dedicated to Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. Rarity and discovery meet artistry as one of the Soutar songs makes its late premiere, shedding new light on Britten’s evolving voice. With a vocalist’s warm timbre and a pianist’s nuanced touch, each piece unfolds in vivid colour, promising both light-hearted delight and profound introspection.
