Programme
Overview
Award-winning cellist Laura van der Heijden and pianist Jâms Coleman present an enchanting recital of French Belle Époque treasures, from salon rarities by pioneering women composers to a stirring arrangement of Franck’s Violin Sonata by Jules Delsart. Delight in an evening of exquisite melodies that celebrate the artistry and innovation of late 19th-century France. From the gilded salons of fin-de-siècle France, a wave of cello and piano sonatas blossomed that forever transformed the instrument’s repertoire. In this recital, Laura van der Heijden—whose rich, burnished tone won her the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Instrumentalist of the Year Award in 2025—and rising pianist Jâms Coleman guide us through this golden era. They open with salon pieces by three daring women who defied the rigid gender norms of their time, each work redolent with lyrical tenderness and elegant nuance. The program crescendos with Jules Delsart’s masterful arrangement of César Franck’s Violin Sonata, reimagined for cello and piano, revealing new depths of warmth and rhapsodic expression. Under the performers’ sensitive artistry, you will be transported to a world of intimate refinement, where every phrase glows with late 19th-century charm and heartfelt emotion.
