Overview

"The Voices of the Amazon - Roberto Carlos" celebrates the music of Roberto Carlos, one of the most iconic figures in Brazilian popular music, at Teatro Amazonas on October 16, 2026.

The concert brings together two distinctive voices, David Assayag and Father Mauro Maia, for a special tribute to the artist’s extensive repertoire. Assayag is renowned as one of the leading voices of the Parintins boi-bumbá tradition, while Mauro Maia has developed a following through performances dedicated to Roberto Carlos’s music. Their meeting creates a distinctive musical dialogue between the traditions of the Amazon region and the songs of the Brazilian “King.” Combining nostalgia, emotion and cultural identity, the performance invites audiences to rediscover familiar melodies in a new setting. Presented in the historic Teatro Amazonas, the concert offers an atmospheric evening dedicated to songs that have become deeply embedded in Brazil’s musical memory.

Teatro Amazonas is one of the most remarkable opera houses in South America and the cultural symbol of Manaus. Rising in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, the theatre is an extraordinary expression of the wealth and ambition of the late 19th-century rubber boom, when Manaus briefly became one of the world’s most prosperous and cosmopolitan cities.

Opened in 1896, Teatro Amazonas was designed in the eclectic style fashionable in Europe at the time. Its architecture combines Italian Renaissance influences with lavish decorative details, creating an almost unexpected European jewel in the middle of the Amazon. The theatre’s iconic dome, covered with thousands of colourful ceramic and glass tiles, has become one of the defining images of Manaus.

The interiors are equally spectacular. The horseshoe-shaped auditorium is richly decorated with gilded elements, paintings and ornate ornamentation, while the famous ceiling paintings create the illusion of looking up into the sky. Materials and decorative elements were brought from Europe, including marble from Italy and wrought iron from France, reflecting the extraordinary international character of Manaus during the rubber boom.

Teatro Amazonas remains a living performing-arts venue, hosting opera, ballet, symphonic concerts, recitals and major cultural events. It is particularly associated with the Amazonas Opera Festival, which brings large-scale opera productions to this historic stage and has helped establish Manaus as an unusual but fascinating destination for lovers of classical music.

Perhaps the theatre's greatest charm lies in its setting. Outside its elegant façade begins the immense world of the Amazon: Manaus stands on the Rio Negro, surrounded by one of the planet’s richest natural environments. A performance at Teatro Amazonas therefore offers an experience unlike that of a traditional European opera house — an evening of music and theatre within a city that serves as a gateway to the rainforest.

For travellers interested in culture, architecture and music, Teatro Amazonas is much more than a beautiful historic building. It is where European opera-house tradition meets the extraordinary landscape and history of the Amazon.
