Programme
Overview
Join The Carice Singers and countertenor Hugh Cutting as they unveil their new album celebrating Sir Michael Tippett’s choral brilliance, from wartime masterpieces to a haunting lullaby. The evening culminates in a world premiere by Alex Groves inspired by Tippett’s artistic circle. Don’t miss this one-night musical revelation.Sir Michael Tippett’s visionary choral world unfolds in a transcendent evening of unaccompanied works, as The Carice Singers and countertenor Hugh Cutting come together for the launch of their new album. In the first half, the programme evokes the bold spirit and communal resilience of Tippett’s Morley College concerts during the Second World War, marrying intricate counterpoint with soaring melodic lines. Hugh Cutting’s pure, resonant tone illuminates a haunting lullaby originally composed for Alfred Deller, capturing Tippett at a pivotal stylistic crossroads in the late 1950s.
The second half celebrates Tippett’s living legacy with the world premiere of a commission by Alex Groves, whose composition draws on the composer’s friendships with sculptor Barbara Hepworth and composer Priaulx Rainier. Groves’s fresh harmonic palette and sculptural textures pay fitting tribute, weaving new forms from Tippett’s enduring innovations. The evening closes with the release of The Carice Singers’ new recording of Tippett’s unaccompanied choral music, available for purchase at the concert venue, inviting audiences to carry these sublime soundscapes home.
