Embark on a journey through sound and sentiment as ‘Memories’ takes you from sunlit tropical waves to cosmic reflections, from Bartók’s exile-born passion to Dvořák’s joyous American revelry. A quartet programme of euphoria, tragedy, optimism and nostalgia awaits.Join us for ‘Memories,’ an evocative string quartet programme that sweeps from gentle island reverie to haunting urban contrasts and triumphant celebration. Robert Davidson’s Straddie evokes a tropical island off Brisbane with easygoing rhythms and flowing melodies that linger long after the last note. Osvaldo Golijov’s Tenebrae juxtaposes a near-tragic bus explosion in Jerusalem with celestial wonder in a planetarium, its Pergolesi-inspired fragments framing moments of tension and cosmic awe. In his Sixth Quartet, Béla Bartók channels exile, loss and financial hardship into music of profound sorrow, inventive vitality and unexpected humour. The evening concludes with Antonín Dvořák’s American Quartet, an exuberant celebration of new horizons, where elegiac nostalgia and rumbustious joy dance together in a wholly American sound. The performance runs approximately two hours, including one interval.
