Programme
Overview
Feel the thunder of Sturm und Drang as Laurence Cummings and the Academy of Ancient Music ignite Haydn’s fiery symphony, Mozart’s youthful debut, Philidor’s witty romp and Telemann’s tragic Ino with Grammy-winner Amanda Forsythe. A season opener like no other, where every emotion runs free.Join Laurence Cummings and the Academy of Ancient Music for a fearless journey into Sturm und Drang—“storm and stress,” a short-lived but revolutionary chapter in eighteenth-century music. The program erupts with Haydn’s early symphony, crackling with raw intensity, followed by Mozart’s astonishing symphonic debut from his prodigious childhood. Next, Philidor’s rollicking French take on an English comedy bursts forth with clever charm and cheeky rhythms. The evening culminates in the heartrending drama of Telemann’s Ino, composed at age eighty-four and sung by Grammy Award-winning soprano Amanda Forsythe, whose luminous voice brings ancient tragedy to life. Arrive early for a free pre-concert talk at 6.30 pm to delve into the bold ideas that shaped this electrifying repertoire.
