Programme
Overview
Discover Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony in all its folk-inspired splendour—from hymn-like opening through birdsong and village dances to a jubilant finale—paired with Smetana’s effervescent overture. Then immerse yourself in Beethoven’s youthful First Piano Concerto, directed from the keyboard by pianist-conductor Sunwook Kim. A sunlit evening of symphonic masterpieces awaits.Embark on a radiant musical journey where Czech folk traditions and classical innovation meet. The programme opens with the buoyant strains of Smetana’s Comedy Overture, whose playful motifs set the stage for Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony. Dvořák’s score unfolds from a solemn hymn through evocative birdcalls and rumbling thunder to the rustic rhythms of village bands and gracefully swirling waltzes before culminating in a jubilant finale. In the second half, Beethoven’s youthful First Piano Concerto takes centre stage, performed and conducted from the keyboard by Sunwook Kim. Embracing Beethoven’s own practice, Kim balances incisive musicianship and warm artistry at the piano, illuminating the concerto’s bright lyricism and orchestral interplay. This sun-drenched programme sparkles with joy, colour and timeless craftsmanship.
